CALL OUT FOR MINI-CONVOY TO IRELAND FOR IRISH SHIP TO GAZA (21st April 2010)

Dear brothers, sisters and comrades,

Many thanks to all who have been supporting the effort to fundraise for the joint effort to reach Gaza by sea next month. We have been holding events in support of IHH and very much appreciate this continued work and contribution. In addition there are ways you can assist in practical terms.

As part of the upcoming international flotilla to challenge the devastating siege imposed upon the Gaza Strip, an Irish cargo ship has been purchased by the Free Gaza Movement (see attached call-out). The ship, renamed the MV Rachel Corrie, will set sail on May the 3rd from Cork city, in Ireland, to sail to Greece to join the flotilla of ships from Turkey, Greece, Sweden and Belgium that will set sail for Gaza towards the end of May.

As well as ongoing fundraising already in motion through Gazaboatconvoy.co.uk, the Irish cargo ship will provide an opportunity for communities in England to collect and send supplies to Ireland before the May 3rd launch.

On May-day weekend we are asking for folks from across England to help collect supplies- medicines, medical equipment, wheelchairs, school materials etc and to drive over to Ireland as part of a mini-convoy. The cost for the ferry and petrol would be £500 and should take 36hours approx. Hospitality and a sleeping space will be provided at the mosque in Cork and for those who want to stay over the weekend, all are welcome to stay for the launch of the ship on May 3rd and wave it on it's way to Gaza. Therefore we aim to leave on Saturday 1st May from the port of Holyhead.

We have only two weeks to organise the mini-convoy but already brothers and sisters from Bradford, London, Gloucester and Worcester are sourcing medicines and other supplies.

We have lists of the desperately needed supplies from Gaza that are available to send out to you all and will have a few people in England co-ordinating with people in Ireland to simplify logistical planning for those who will drive over.

The Irish cargo ship will carry over 800 tonnes of cement, medicines, school materials and whatever supplies we can organise in the coming two weeks. Time is short, but a lot can be achieved in two weeks and the cargo ship provides another opportunity, following the success of the previous Viva/IHH land convoys, for communities in England to show direct solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Gaza Boat Convoy UK Recent Event in London(21st April 2010)

On the 16th of April 2010, we had a fund raising event in Bethnal Green, London.

Through the "live link" to Gaza we were able to participate in live discussion with some of the people in Gaza through a large t.v. screen:-

University students from local universities in Gaza, spoke about how the media is a powerful non-violent tool for resistance and for world public outreach Rada from the International Solidarity Movement will speak about the situation, as they are very active Saber Zanien - Beit Hanoun local initiative "will speak about water wells spare parts, as its very important for the farmers near buffer zone, to replant their lands" Watar Band - Music "will perform 2 songs" Testimony from a victim "who has been affected by the last war"

Mahfouz Kabariti from Palestinian Sailing Federation PSF, spoke about his dream and many as well to initiate a surfing school here in gaza and how it will be very useful for the young Palestinians

Our speaker on the evening was Sameh Habeeb a student from Gaza currently studying for his masters degree here in the U.K. (see photo) and founder of The Palestine Telegraph http://www.paltelegraph.com/ A very active Zionist group contacted the owners of the building where we held the event and insisted that Sameh not be allowed to speak, as they want the truth about Palestine to remain unspoken. To overcome this ban we all decided we must not bow to Zionist pressure so we made the decision that Sameh will speak outside the hall and everyone at the event relocated to the street outside where Sameh did a rousing speech about Palestine.

Food was sold and we had some stalls selling Palestinian goods.
